ZUMBA® - A Fitness Program That Lets You Enjoy What You Do!

ZUMBA® participants at the UHMC Wellness Center.
Get in shape and stay healthy while having fun! Join the many people that are experiencing  this exciting and addictive dance workout routine. Zumba Fitness is the Latin-inspired dance-fitness program. It can be fun for everyone, regardless of your shape, size or age. It’s also a great way to meet people and make new friends.

Alberto “Beto” Perez accidentally created the Zumba experience during one of his aerobics classes in 1993. He forgot his traditional aerobics music and improvised by using his own mix of music, which included salsa and merengue music. However, the program officially started in 2001. There are currently “more than 12 million people taking weekly Zumba classes in over 110,000 locations across more than 125 countries.”

Amazingly, over the years the program has evolved and now offers six types of Zumba classes. The program uses a number of different Latin styles of dance. There are regular Zumba classes, Zumba Gold classes, Zumba Toning classes, Aqua Zumba classes, Zumbatomic classes, and Zumba in the Circuit classes. In the regular Zumba classes, people can dance to high-energy Latin and international beats. The Zumba Gold program is modified to suit the needs of older participants. The Zumba Toning program helps participants sculpt their bodies by exercising and doing cardio workouts with toning sticks . With Aqua Zumba, individuals participate in cardio conditioning, and body toning exercises in the water. Zumbatomic Classes are modified and designed for children who are 4 - 12 years old. Lastly, there are the Zumba in the Circuit classes, which 30 minutes long and incorporates a series of strength exercises in timed intervals.

If you are interested, Zumba classes are offered at many gyms and studios in Hawaii. Some people even try the classes offered at different locations to see what class they like the best. Each Zumba instructor has their own slightly unique set of music and dance routines. The University of Hawaii, Maui College Wellness Center offers Zumba, Zumba Gold and Zumba Toning classes at their facilities. Visit their website at: http://uhmcwellness.wordpress.com/ for class schedules and more information. You can also learn more about Zumba Fitness at http://www.zumba.com/

Enjoy what you do and join the Zumba fitness party!

Yoga. A 5,000 Year Old Tradition That Continues to Surprise.

At one time, yoga was considered a practice for people into new age philosophy. Today, taking a yoga class is main stream. Individuals from all walks of life, young and old, are making yoga a part of their daily lives. Perhaps this has to do with the numerous physical and mental health benefits one gains from this ancient practice.

The goal of yoga, which literally means “to unite” is to balance the mind, body, and spirit through a series of different “asana” or poses along with special breathing techniques. A regular yoga practice will help to develop greater strength, flexibility and balance, improve your posture, increase the range of motion in your joints and improve concentration. Medical studies have also stated that the stress level reduction that comes along with a regular yoga practice may reduce many IRS-related risk factors for cardio vascular disease.

These are all great physical benefits of yoga, but what about the mental and spiritual benefits we have heard so much about? Well, it should not come as a surprise that studies are now being done on using yoga as a treatment for depression. Individuals surveyed after a yoga class are happier and feel a greater spiritual connection to their God. The improved ability to concentrate also creates a more productive day.

So, are you ready to start incorporating yoga into your daily routine?

The University of Hawaii, Maui College Wellness Center offers daily yoga classes. Check their class schedule at: http://uhmcwellness.wordpress.com/schedule/

It’s Not Easy to Resist Fast Food Commercials

All those advertisements —are we being brainwashed and saturated with subliminal messages?

While older research indicates placing subliminal text within visual media as not having any measurable effect on the viewer, today media is saturated with continual and repetitive flashing visual stimulus. The research of Canadian’s Ronnie Cuperfain, a company marketing executive, and Keith Clarke, a professor of Marketing at the School of Business Administration at Dalhouise University claim, “academic marketers may have been too quick to discount the ability of subliminal presentations to impact upon consumer decision making” (A New Perspective). Their research indicates that right brain activity and memory recall to image placement and repetition can be highly influential to viewers. According to Siva K. Balasubramanian, Associate Professor of Marketing at the College of Business and Administration, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, the current trend of advertisers is through the use of hybrid advertising messages, or those messages that employ hidden or deceptive practices, such as, product placement – having an actor use a brand or having it in the camera view’s background, program tie-ins, where advertising agencies dictate multiple or exclusive advertising rights over the movie, and Program-Length Commercial (PLC) also known as infomercials where the viewer watches a full length episode of actors espousing the use of the advertiser’s product throughout. It appears advertisers and marketers in the United States have dominating free reign to influence the American viewer in any manner possible with seemingly little social or moral guidance.

What do you think?

Healthy Nutritious Lifestyle Living in Hawaii-Getting Started by Bevin Parker-Evans

If you were watching Dr. Oz or Nate Berkus this week you probably noticed all of the mention of the use of whole grains and unique grain types for healthy living such as Quinoa (keen–wah), Buckwheat kasha and barley.  Spelt, kamut and millet have again come into vogue!   Never heard of teff or amaranth? You will soon.

Here in Hawaii, we lag behind the mainland trends and access to such specialty health foods.  It’s also more difficult to find and expensive to buy when you do find it.  Don’t feel bad, I’m sure that while watching the Red Sox and the Phillies this weekend I probably won’t be serving those whole grains either.  Your Canoe club probably won’t be serving millet after a good healthy paddle and I’ll wager that Snooki and the cast of Hawaii 5-0 will not  be serving up healthy barley dips at their weekend parties either.  Learning about how to incorporate new foods in your life is just one part of being prepared and opening your mind to delicious new menus which will enrich and change your life.

In Hawaii, family means celebrations and every single party or event is our way of celebrating culture, tradition and Ohana-usually fortified with heavy spoonfuls of tempting foods such as Mama’s Macaroni Salad, Malasadas, high-fat pork and sticky white rice.  Want to change the result of event overeating?

One tried and true method for changing your lifestyle is to join a community of like-minded persons such as our own WebPage at http://www.livelifealoha.org/.  At our Facebook page, you can connect with others from Hawaii and chat about the best ways to survive the next Luau event.
